Pros and Cons about being on a Design Team

I came across this thread started by scrappingmelissa on Splitcoast Stampers dot com!

Scrappingmelissa asks, “I just dont understand what the big deal about being a guest designer with all these stamp companies? I want to just stamp, create and have fun. I think If i became a dt person then I would have to do it and where is the fun in that? Am I missing something? dont flame me, I just dont get it is all.”

Well, first you need to determine if this is right for you!

Here are some pros and cons…

Pros

  • Discount on product
  • Free product
  • Recognition
  • Validation
  • Challenge
  • You get to know people with your same interests and passions.

Cons

  • There are deadlines that might stifle creativity.
  • You may have to use things you don’t LOVE LOVE LOVE.
  • There is some added pressure to what you may think of as a fun hobby.
  • If you don’t blog, you may be required to have one.
  • You may not be able to use other company’s items with another.
  • It may enable you to purchase more than you need/want.

If you all have more pros and cons, let me know and I’ll add them to the list!

Great list, Tiffany. I love it that I can learn from the other designers. Sometimes it’s hard for me to get into the assignment because I may not like the designs, papers, sketches, etc., but the other designers inspire me.

This is great… I think the fact that you may be limited to using other product is indeed difficult, BUT… I think it makes you better as an artist/designer. It forces you to use your creative brain, think outside the box, and use what isn’t “you” and turn it into something that is. I think the biggest “con” is the pressure that comes w/deadlines… I’m sure that can definitely stifle creativity. TFS!!!

Pro: Practice makes perfect. You guys are awesome but I am sure you get to master things faster this way =o)

Con: Lots of time an energy that you may not always have

Thank you for all your hard work and inspiration =o)

Great post, Tiff! When you are force to use things you don’t love, you tend to be more creative and turn it into something beautiful. I do admit that there is some added pressure but take it as a learning process to be better. That’s what I’m facing right now.

thanks for linking us up to all of the juicy scs threads! what struck me as funny about this one is that she points to guest dt spots. what’s the pressure in that? its a 1 time deal.

as far as being on a dt as the other posters said limiting supplies increases creativity. deadlines can be an issue so hopefully the company you’re working for spells things out for you up front and doesn’t throw in any surprises mid term. and you should genuinely like the product, otherwise what’s the point?

I think a big pro is that you get a lot of projects completed in a timely manner! :) And for me with the EIC and now my DT position with my scrapbook store I find that I am often trying new things because of the inspiration I get from a certain shop or the packet I am given by my scrapbook store.
